CAPE TOWN - President Cyril Ramaphosa says government is investigating claims by the US government that a Russian cargo ship left the Simon’s Town navy base in Cape Town last December with South African arms on board.
Democratic Alliance leader John Steenhuisen sneaked in a question to the president in the National Assembly on Thursday afternoon to confirm the US government’s claims about the vessel, known as the Lady R.Speaker Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula attempted to block Ramaphosa from answering because it was unrelated to the core question put to him.“I know you are so keen and so interested in knowing what happened.
US ambassador to South Africa Reuben Brigety has been reported as saying that America is convinced South Africa had supplied Russia with weapons, despite its non-aligned stance on the invasion of Ukraine.“It’s being looked into, and whilst the process continues, I want you to allow that process to continue to reach its fruition.”
