The ALL IN Challenge fills in the gaps I was missing in high school and makes civic engagement readily available at the collegiate level. High schools need to be a place where students learn what civic engagement is and teaches us the effects it has on the world around us.

Growing up in a rural area in the Midwest, I never really put too much thought into voting or civic engagement. I’m pretty sure the American government structure was taught every single year of my school career. Checks and balances, taxation without representation, and the Declaration of Independence were all things that, by eighth grade, I could explain in my sleep.

In my senior year of high school, I turned 18, got my first car, and voted in the presidential primary. Honestly, only one of those things made me feel like an actual adult. After the disappointment of having to watch the 2012 election from the sidelines, I was more than ready to learn more about the candidates running. I did everything I could to make it a priority to get informed to make sure I knew who and what I wanted to support on the ballot.

Looking back at an election as polarizing as 2016, it’s understandable that current politics weren’t mentioned in my classes. It was surprising that my high school didn’t do more to ensure eligible students were registered to vote or to let us know the location of polling places. Instead, my school was a complete voting desert. I didn’t talk about voting because no one else did. I felt isolated as seemingly the only one who cared about the future in front of us.
