Council approves $110,000 expenses to foot the bill itself after nonprofit bows out.

The show must go on. That’s the word from Antioch City Council, which agreed to fund the city’s big July Fourth celebration after the nonprofit that previously hosted it bowed out.

On Tuesday, Brad Helfenberger, parks and recreation director, told council members that staff has been working hard on planning the large downtown event and has already secured several contractors. Each year the celebration attracts thousands to the waterfront for a parade, festival, kids’ events, music and fireworks.

The director also noted that staff wants to partner with the community fundraising and planning the July Fourth event and is working on creating a sponsorship program to help defray the costs.
