Waste collection services in Gugulethu, Philippi East/Lower Crossroads and Nyanga have reportedly returned to their usual schedule, now with security measures in place. This move follows temporary disruptions in these regions arising from threats against collection staff demanding protection fees from the City.
As part of its commitment to restoring services, the City’s Urban Waste Management Directorate began addressing the collection backlog from the previous week on Saturday, 7 October. They intend to continue this effort throughout the week if required.City concerned about the escalating attacks on waste services personnel‘Residents are asked to please be patient as we deal with the backlog. We appreciate residents’ cooperation during this time,’ it commented.
To expedite the process, the City had the collections team on duty on Saturday, 7 October, addressing areas like Gugulethu, Philippi and Nyanga that missed their regular collection between Wednesday and Friday of the previous week. It said that if they were not able to clear the backlog on Saturday, they would continue to do so this week.
