The City of Rochester announced details Thursday of its settlement with a Rochester Police Department officer blinded in an on-duty attack.

Officer Denny Wright was attacked by Keith Williams while responding to a domestic disturbance call Oct. 4, 2019 on Peck Street. Wright was stabbed in the face and eyes, leaving him blind. In his lawsuit, Wright, who responded without backup, claimed he was not properly warned that the address of the reported disturbance had dozens of previous emergency calls, including one that resulted in a standoff with Williams.
Wright and his wife brought claims for pain and suffering against the city and Monroe County. The city said all parties reached an agreement last month. Under the terms of the agreement, the Wrights will receive lump-sum payments of $1.25 million from the city and $500,000 from the county. The city will pay for any medical care related to Wright's injuries and continue to provide health insurance for the Wrights.
Wright will retire from the city but continue to serve as an ambassador for the police department. The city will also pay Wright $65,000 annually for up to 10 years following his retirement. Williams was sentenced in June 2022 to 40 years in prison after a jury convicted him of attempted aggravated murder and aggravated assault.
In a statement, the city called Wright "a hero to the Rochester community and the embodiment of the courage, the selflessness, and the humility to which all police officers aspire.
