The City of Jacksonville will make a mental health-related announcement Monday at 12:30 p.m.

FILE Jacksonville Mayor Donna Deegan during a news conference highlighting the work of the Homeless Veteran Reintegration Program.– The City of Jacksonville launched a mental health initiative called “ Mental Health Matters Jax” during a special ceremony Monday at City Hall.

With mental health illnesses on the rise, Mayor Donna Deegan announced the launching of three programs that address different mental health challenges. The first program involves providing more funding to United Way. This additional funding is necessary, according to Deegan, because they’ve seen a 75% increase in crisis calls. With this funding, they plan to add more crisis managers that respond to those calls.

The second program will directly help children. The city will provide $430,000 in funding for Angel Kids Pediatrics, an organization that provides children with mental and behavioral health services. The third and last program is called Mental Health First Aid, which is a public education program that will help the community identify, understand and respond to signs of mental illness and substance use disorders.

“This training program gives community members the skills they need to reach out and provide initial help and support to someone who may be developing a mental health or substance abuse problem or experiencing some other type of crisis,” Deegan said. The announcement comes on Mental Health Awareness Month — a month to increase awareness of the importance of mental health and wellness in people’s lives.
