Two City of Johannesburg contracts - which spanned five years to procure much-needed fire and rescue vehicles - saw the City bleed millions for trucks it never received before both contracts were cancelled amid allegations of irregularities.
The City suffers a dire lack of fire and rescue vehicles, also known as the"Red Fleet", to meet emergency demands. Yet, attempts to procure more have only wasted millions for the City as residents' lives were put in danger. In 2015, the City appointed Fire Raiders to supply 29 fire and rescue vehicles for R178 million, issuing a purchase order for 16 of those trucks, but cancelling the contract before they could be delivered.
