To prepare for colder weather, the City of Austin Street and Bridge Operations held a training event Thursday morning so new employees could learn how to best h

Michael Girod, Division Manager of District Maintenance, said there were six stations set up, each representing different aspects of storm response. The employees learned about chainsaw safety, how to apply chains to snow tires and common pre-determined routes.

“They know that if they’re called out in the middle of the night, they’ve had the training. They’ve seen it before, it’s not something new,” Girod said. “The confidence they build here in a safe environment will broadcast out in the field.”, a weather pattern characterized by warm temperatures in the Pacific Ocean. With the increased rainfall comes a higher probability of ice as“The ice is really what cripples the city,” Girod said. “Not so much the roads, it’s more power outages, trees down.

The City hired more employees, and Girod said they will have over 200 people that will be able to rotate through the 12-hour shifts that severe weather events require. They also added five new spreader boxes to their fleet so it will be easier to get debris off the road. The most important thing for Austinites to remember is that roads are treated with emergency services in mind.
