The city got help from Anchorage police to clear some campers living in tents on Fairbanks Street on Thursday, leading to strong reactions from those experiencing homelessness and living there.

ANCHORAGE, Alaska -The Anchorage Police Department CAP team, in coordination with the Health Department and Parks and Recreation began clearing areas of the Fairbanks street camp on Thursday morning leading to strong reactions from homeless people living there.

“We are enforcing ADA and right of way compliance,” Johnson said. “So people are not being compelled to leave the area, but they are being compelled to follow ADA.” “I was actually told by APD this morning, that I was to get out of my car, get my stuff, move now or they will throw it away, tow my car and throw me in jail if I don’t move faster,” Polly said.

Scott, a man living off of Fairbanks Street was visibly frustrated by the clearing taking place Thursday and asked for city leaders to witness Fairbanks Street first hand.Johnson says there’s a possibility the street could be formally abated under Title 15 rules, but it’s based on decisions by the new administration, Parks and Recreation and the Anchorage Police Department Community Action Policing Team.

It is more tricky when it comes to vehicles that are occupied on Fairbanks Street, Johnson says, leaving a gray area for the possible action the city can take. Eric Glatt, the Executive Director of Borealis Legal Services, says the municipality seems to never have the answer for where people can go who are homeless.
