His announcement to city employees comes after closed-door meetings with the City Council regarding his work performance

National City’s City Manager Brad Raulston began a work hiatus this week for personal reasons, he said.

Raulston did not specify the duration of his absence, but said Friday via a text message that his departure “is to help my mother move from her home in Seattle to a senior facility in Boise. She needs me right now, and I always put family first.”His announcement comes two days after the City Council held a special meeting where the only item on the agenda was a closed session discussion on Raulston’s performance.

Among them was a recommendation to extend a $50,000 contract with the city’s pool service provider EXOS Community Services, LLC. Council membersto approve the agreement, saying they weren’t comfortable granting an agreement for a facility that remains under construction and that the city should manage the pool. City staff said keeping EXOS would ensure a smooth and timely transition in managing the new facility when it opens.

Raulston has worked for National City since 2006. He previously served as deputy city manager before taking on his current role, overseeing more than 350 employees and a $65 million budget for the 2022-23 fiscal year. In 2019, he was selected from a pool of nearly 40 applicants after a nationwide search by Bob Murray & Associates that cost the city $24,000.
