A report cites limited time and council officer capability

Belfast Council has confirmed there will be no Belfast Culture Night alternative this year in the city.

She proposed a scaled down alternative to the erstwhile September festival, and despite being received coolly by Sinn Féin, the council committee agreed to ask officers to look at options, including an extended Late Night Art evening on September 20. “This is based on a number of factors including: the wide range of cultural activity already taking place as part of Belfast 2024; the limited officer capacity to deliver this programme; and the limited time available for a robust public procurement process or a small grants programme.”

“There would be no other art forms included e.g. music, comedy, theatre, but there may be a participatory element where possible with craft and art demonstrations and artists talks, as well as exhibitions and shows.” Green Councillor Brian Smyth said at the meeting: “We are disappointed at how this has played out. Councillor Groogan came here with a well-thought out proposal with a light touch approach to what galleries are already doing, a clear marketing budget and strategy from the council.
