Columbus leaders will gather in Linden for a Memorial Day ceremony that will include a special tribute to an Ohio National Guard member killed overseas.
Columbus City Councilmember Nancy Day-Achauer, chair of the Veterans' Affairs Committee, and the Department of Neighborhoods will host the second-annual Memorial Day Ceremony at the Linden War Memorial at Linden Park. The ceremony will include a presentation of colors by the Ft. Hayes AFJROTC Honor Guard, an invocation by Pastor Joseph W. Stanley Jr. of the Greater Twelfth Missionary Baptist Church in South Linden, and remarks from Danny Eakins of the Ohio Department of Veterans Services.
This year’s event will also honor Master Sgt. Tyler Simmons, a 28-year-old Ohio National Guard member who was one of six airmen killed during a refueling crash in Iraq on March 12. Simmons was a 2015 graduate of Columbus City Schools’ Eastmoor Academy and had been stationed at Rickenbacker Air National Guard Base. The tribute will feature Ohio Department of Veterans Services Director retired Maj.
