Chief Barber says once the contracts are approved, they can start the next phases of the project.

) -During Tuesday’s meeting the Mobile City Council started considering contracts related to the civic center’s future but according to the mayor’s proposal it won’t be the only venue with a different feel. The council is considering two performance-based contracts that would see Oak View Group take over the convention center and the Saenger Theatre in the next couple of months.

“Improved attendance by the customers who are attending there will improve the attendance to both facilities and will have big quality conventions wanting to return to Mobile because of that experience,” said Barber. As for the civic center itself, the council is also considering an over $5 million contract with Volkert to make sure the project stays on time and under budget. As well as an over $16 million contract with Populous to get the master plan from the current 30% design to 100%. Chief Barber says there’s a 60% design checkpoint in July for the project.
