The city says the ordinances won’t be enforced immediately so they can have time to educate the community on what they are about and to educate officers on how to enforce them.) - In a unanimous vote, the Mobile City Council approved three ordinances that clarifies old language when it comes to public places. The ordinances were related to obstructions on sidewalks which means no one can block pedestrians from freely moving down the sidewalk.

The city council had been looking at these ordinances for about a month and even held a public safety committee meeting about last week. Homeless Outreach Coordinator Kendell Young says he made sure the homeless community was protected. The ordinances say anyone who violates them could be fined up to $500 or taken into custody. Councilman William Carroll says the city isn’t looking to arrest anyone.

“They will be able to not go to jail, but they’ll be able to be taken to a homeless shelter in our city,” added Young.
