Perry will be allowed to take a sabbatical, and a District 10 representative will be selected to replace him temporarily on the City Council.
, as they had originally planned, after Perry expressed remorse for a car crash he caused more than a week ago while accused of driving under the influence.“During this time, I will be taking the appropriate measures as determined by medical professionals to ensure that this will never happen again,” Perry said. “I commit wholeheartedly to whatever course of action or rehabilitation they recommend.
City Council could vote as soon as Dec. 1 on Perry’s temporary replacement. When Perry decides he is ready to return, he will be allowed to do so. Council members said Perry’s tone Monday struck them as sincere. Because of his new apology, District 8 Councilman Manny Pelaez moved to remove language from the no-confidence resolution that said Perry lacked remorse and showed little accountability for his actions.
Nirenberg said Monday that the police body camera video shows the allegations in the police report to be accurate. Early on, the mayor said if Perry did what he was accused of, he should step down.More than a dozen supporters of Perry came out Monday to ask City Council to turn down the resolution of no confidence and step back from their call for resignation. They said Perry made a mistake, but he’d already admitted it.
He said the decision on whether he stays in office should be left with the voters of District 10. Many of his supporters who spoke to City Council Monday agreed.
