A proposal from Council Member Teri Castillo would give the council more say in who gets coveted seats on some city boards and committees.

Like other San Antonio mayors before him, Mayor Ron Nirenberg has been hoarding power, using his authority to decide who gets appointed to key city boards and commissions. Now that he is a lame duck, some City Council members are trying to get what they see as their fair share of appointments.

Council attempts to limit mayor’s power over policy proposals In the spring, council got Nirenberg to cede some of the power he wielded over the speed at which their policy proposals, known formally as Council Consideration Requests, were taken up by a key committee — the first step toward enacting a new city policy or ordinance.

Former Secretary of State Rolando Pablos joins crowded field for San Antonio mayor A handful of council members also recently grumbled about how Nirenberg selected all 15-members of his Charter Review Commission, which he tasked with recommending changes to specific sections of the city’s governing document. That hasn’t always been the case, according to the request.

Here are the six city charter amendments that San Antonio voters will decide in the Nov. 5 election Supporting Castillo’s plan Cabello Havrda signed onto Castillo’s council consideration request as a show of support for the proposal. District 4 Council Member Adriana Rocha Garcia, who announced her mayoral candidacy on Aug. 13, and Council Members Marina Alderete Gavito and Marc Whyte also signed it.
