A new plan from the mayor could see a significant increase in signing bonuses for police officers and a retention bonus to help combat staffing shortages. The state is also considering other measures like college education benefits for law enforcement officers' children and financial aid to municipalities.
. The city is considering a new recruitment and retention plan from the mayor that would up the sign on bonus from $5,000 to $10,000. It would also create a $10,000 retention bonus.Earlier this year, Speaker of the House Nathaniel Ledbetter created a special committee to try and find a way to fight violent crime in urban areas. He placed formeron the committee. Treadaway says one of the topics the group spends time on is the issue of police staffing.
That would serve as both a recruitment and retention tool but Representative Treadaway says the state is looking at every option, even potentially using cash to help municipalities with additional costs.
