‘B-movie set’ — Despite reservations, city panel approves Alamo exhibit depicting entry gate and Low Barracks where Jim Bowie died.
Historic and Design Review Commission
Patrick Gallagher, program manager for the Alamo project, said the project team consulted historians and reviewed archival evidence in planning the design, placement, scale and selection of materials for the exhibit. He said the aim is to give visitors a feel for what the gate and lunette looked like without trying to replicate them literally.
The proposed lunette, a temporary part of the exhibit that would be about 50 feet wide and 60 feet long, caused the most concern for commissioners. Its timbered walls would be just over 9 feet tall, scaled back from an estimated original height of at least 16 feet., said the exhibit is “too large and disruptive for the plaza” and would distract from the Alamo Church and Long Barrack and possibly be “mistaken as historic.
Responding to concerns about possibly disturbing archaeological features, officials of the nonprofit Alamo Trust, which operates the site, said excavations for the exhibit would reach no more than 12 inches below ground and would be monitored by on-site experts and the historical commission. The city owns the portion of the plaza where the exhibit would stand.
