the McLaren Circus set up operations at Fairbridge Mall in Brackenfell. Since then, its sold-out shows have been attracting criticism from, a small group of protesters gathered at the entrance of the circus on Saturday with the message of ‘Entertainment should never come at the expense of animal welfare.’Recent incidents, including distressing findings by the SPCA, have highlighted the grim reality animals in most circuses face, according to Toni Brockhoven, chair of the BWC.
‘Circuses often involve long, gruelling hours of confinement in small, inadequate spaces, denying animals essential physical and social needs,’ Brockhoven added. McLaren Circus has in turn made accusations against BWC for ‘human rights infringements’, adding that the ‘activists’ were ignorant of animal, let alone human, rights, according to Karl Hildebrand, McLaren public relations officer.‘In Human Rights Month BWC bussed in a group of people, many evidently under-age, from the Valley of Plenty community, a disadvantaged one on the Cape Flats, allocating posters and making them protest,’ Hildebrand added.
The BWC has responded by saying that these accusations distract from the real issue at hand, namely the abuse of circus animals.
