A trial has begun for Emil 'Bill' Petrov who has pleaded not guilty to killing Cindy Crossthwaite in her Melton South home in 2007.

He has pleaded not guilty.A man accused of murdering his estranged wife bought a gun and asked a friend to help with an assassination plot, prosecutors allege.

Mr Gibson said Mr Petrov paid $3,000 for a handgun and asked his friend, Brian O'Shea, to help in an alleged plan to kill Ms Crossthwaite. Mr Petrov also denied making calls to his wife's phone before the killing, when he was alleged to have said "I will get you next time" and words to the effect of "I'll shut you up for good".

He had gone to the home after friends had been unable to reach her and she failed to pick up her daughter from school.
