Although the holiday celebrates Mexico's victory over the French Empire at the Battle of Puebla in 1862,with many businesses in Illinois and Chicago offering deals to commemorate the day.Sign up for NBC Chicago newsletters. Several Chicago Cinco de Mayo events are set to take place this weekend, including the Cinco de Mayo parade Sunday, May 7. According to the city, the parade steps off at noon at Cermak, traveling through Damen to Marshall.
A Cinco de Miler 5-mile course race is scheduled for Saturday, May 6 at the Montrose Harbor. The race begins at 8;30 a.m. and continues along Lake Michigan before returning to Montrose Harbor.
