The conviction stems from an Aug. 27, 2020, encounter between Wainwright, who turned 18 three weeks earlier, and the then-17-year-old girl. A grand jury indicted Wainwright in November 2020. He was charged with two counts of rape. He was also charged with two counts of gross sexual imposition. The trial was delayed multiple times because of the coronavirus pandemic.
