The action genre is one that Cillian Murphy has only occasionally explored, and one of his most underrated efforts is getting a new streaming home. Co-written and directed by Ben Wheatley, Free Fire starred as an IRA member in the late 1970s who, along with various partners, goes to a Boston warehouse for an arms deal involving an intermediary, a representative and the arms dealer's associates.

However, with previous tensions between the two groups pouring over into the meeting, things escalate into an all-out shootout among everyone as they vie for the money and weapons. Now, nearly a decade after it came out, Free Fire is changing streaming homes as it heads to Netflix. The underrated action-comedy is set to premiere on the platform on February 10, giving it its first proper streaming home in some time after most recently being available to view for free on Fandango At Home. Featuring an ensemble roster that also included Oscar winner Brie Larson, Armie Hammer, Sharlto Copley, Jack Reynor, Babou Ceesay and Sam Riley, among others, Free Fire was a modest critical success upon its 2016 release, netting a 69% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Audiences, however, were a little more divided on the genre throwback, awarding it a Rotten 52%, while the movie also failed to recoup its $7 million production budget at the box office. In spite of this, Free Fire has something of a unique origin story behind it. On top of being Wheatley's first straightforward project after his more experimental work on the likes of the well-received Kill List and sci-fi dystopian thriller High-Rise, the movie was also planned out in Minecraft by the director with the help of producer Andy Starke's son. In an effort to make the biggest use of its single-location structure, while also being inspired by everything from Evil Dead 2 to a real-life shootout between the FBI and bank robbers in Miami, Wheatley turned to Mojang Studios' best-selling sandbox title for help. The co-writer/director began by sketching the layout for Starke's son, who subsequently filled it out in order to give the production team an idea for how to make the script flow through the warehouse. Free Fire's upcoming Netflix premiere date comes at the perfect time for fans of Murphy. For starters, its debut on the platform comes just a month ahead of Peaky Blinders: The Immortal Man's release on March 20. The highly-anticipated sequel film to the period crime drama is also just the start of the franchise's return, as creator Steven Knight is currently working on a two-season sequel series to the original, to which the Oscar winner is attached to executive produce, though is unclear if he will continue his role of Tommy Shelby. Additionally, it comes right on the heels of Murphy's long-awaited return as Jim for 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple, the second installment in Danny Boyle's new trilogy of zombie horror films. With the first franchise revival hitting Netflix some three months after its theatrical release, that would put the 2026 sequel on the platform around April, giving Murphy the chance to be on the top of Netflix's charts for three months or more. Posts By Grant Hermanns One of the other major elements working in Free Fire's favor to become a Netflix hit is that the movie has been without a streaming home for a while. Combined with a star-studded cast and the benefit of being an underrated genre effort, all of which have frequently added up to success for other titles, Wheatley and Murphy may just get the audience some felt they deserved a decade ago. 4/10 Free Fire 10 stars 9 stars 8 stars 7 stars 6 stars 5 stars 4 stars 3 stars 2 stars 1 star Like Follow Followed R Action Crime Mystery Release Date March 31, 2017 Runtime 90 minutes Director Ben Wheatley Writers Ben Wheatley, Amy Jump Producers Andrew Starke 3 Images Close Cast See All Main Genre Action Executive Producer Martin Scorsese Budget $7 million Studio StudioCanal Distributor StudioCanal Powered by Expand Collapse
