Smugglers of cigarettes and vape products owed the national government P7.2 billion in unpaid taxes, according to the Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR). BIR Commissioner Romeo D. Lumagui Jr.

Bureau of Customs-Cagayan de Oro foiled an attempt to smuggle two shipments of cigarettes from China worth P160 million and declared as “personal effects.” The 2,000 master cases of cigarettes were shipped in two container vans.

Lumagui said about 500,000 packs of smuggled cigarettes and 170,000 vape products have been confiscated by the BIR just this year from its simultaneous raids all over the country. A vape product carrying a “Tamaraw Stamp” means that it has paid the proper excise taxes. Non-payment of excise taxes will subject the vape products to seizure by the BIR and will expose the business owner to criminal liability for tax evasion.
