CIA Director William Burns delivered a message to the head of Russia's foreign intelligence service that the U.S. was not involved in last week's armed rebellion by Wagner mercenary boss Yevgeny Prigozhin, CBS News confirmed.
, CBS News confirmed. The Biden administration has publicly stressed that it views the uprising and its fallout as an internal Russian affair.
President Biden said on Monday that the U.S. had conducted the outreach to"make sure we gave Putin no excuse - let me emphasize - we gave Putin no excuse to blame this on the West or to blame this on NATO." On Wednesday Biden said"yes" when he was asked if he believed Putin had been weakened by the events, adding the Russian leader had"become a pariah around the world.
Before Prigozhin's rebellion was launched, Burns had also traveled to Ukraine, where he has gone regularly since the outbreak of the war, a U.S. official confirmed. U.S. intelligence agencies had been tracking the increasingly acrimonious tension between Prigozhin and the Russian military for months and had briefed administration and congressional stakeholders on a potential armed rebellion shortly before it sprung.
