‘Shoulder to shoulder’: San Antonio church brings together Congolese, Ethiopian and Afghan families

Bev Spitznagel, Cross Roads Church facilities and events coordinator, speaks with guests attending an interfaith Thanksgiving dinner on Sunday. The event was attended by Ethiopian, Congolese, and several Afghan refugee families at Cross Roads Church in Windcrest.SAN ANTONIO — Presbyterian women mingled with Congolese women and girls, who wore white headscarves and floor-length dresses. They stopped by tables to chat with Afghan women, each clad in a hijab and burqa.

Hazrat Gul Nuristani, 38, lost his legs in a blast from an improvised explosive device while working as an interpreter for the U.S. military in Afghanistan. He was grateful as he and his family enjoyed the meal. And when retired Army Col. Tom Delk, 61, thanked him for his service to the American military, Nuristani told him Delk were all united in the fight for freedom.

Diebold said they signed up with the nonprofit Culturingua to sponsor one family, and it grew from there. Volunteers have helped with tasks such as taking families to and from doctor appointments, enrolling children in school and helping with legal paperwork. Nuristani agreed. A.J. Pardis, 34, who traveled from Houston to interpret for the refugee families, replied with a saying from the Afghanistan army.
