Facing growing wildfire risks, a group of Chula Vista residents banded together to clear brush and create defensible space around their homes. The initiative was driven by concerns over the increasing amount of dry brush in the area, a prime fuel source for wildfires.

In the face of growing wildfire concerns, a group of Chula Vista residents took decisive action to protect their homes from potential blazes. The initiative was spurred by the increasing presence of dry brush surrounding homes, a factor that can dramatically exacerbate fire risks during specific weather conditions. Regan Ohrmund, a resident of 20 years, shared her anxieties about the overgrown vegetation encroaching on her property. 'It was getting scary.

The tumbleweeds were about this big; they were all over here,' she described. Seeing the escalating danger, her neighbor, Tyler Miller, resolved to directly address the issue. Miller recognized the imminent fire hazard posed by the unchecked vegetation and initially sought assistance from both city and county officials. However, he encountered roadblocks in identifying the appropriate resources to effectively address the problem. 'This property that we’re on here is borderline from all three ways; it’s hard to figure out who you’re going to associate with and who’s going to help you,' Miller explained.Determined to take control of the situation, Miller galvanized a team of volunteers to tackle the task themselves. They procured heavy-duty equipment to clear the dense foliage and establish a defensible space around Ohrmund's home. According to Miller, their efforts resulted in clearing a substantial area. 'We did a 100-foot fire break around the entire property, 360 degrees, a few acres,' he stated. Even though this plan was conceived before the devastating wildfires that scorched Los Angeles, the recent events have amplified fire safety consciousness throughout the region. Ohrmund expressed a newfound sense of security stemming from these proactive measures. 'If, in fact, there is a fire, I’ve got a fire break from my property, and the fire engines can come up here if they need to,' she commented. Looking ahead, Miller aims to expand his community initiative. 'We’re into doing another fire break in the Agua Vista; we’ll see if we can plan another one and get more residents this time,' he shared.
