SAN DIEGO — Councilmember Andrea Cardenas and her brother are expected to appear in court on Thursday relating to an allegedly fraudulent loan for a political consulting business.
If she is convicted of all charges, Cardenas could face up to five years and eight months in custody. She would then be removed from her seat on the city council. They are accused of using federal loans that were meant to help struggling businesses during the pandemic. Prosecutors say they lied about how they were using those loans.
These were federal COVID-19 relief funds and applied under grassroots resources. They allegedly claimed to have 34 employees working for them. The employees listed worked for"Harbor Collective," a marijuana dispensary in San Diego, a business that underThe charges also claim that Jesus Cardenas did not disclose that 'grassroots' meant a political consulting firm. That would have made the business ineligible for a PPP loan.
