This article highlights Chuck Cooper's historic achievement as the first Black player to participate in a college basketball game south of the Mason-Dixon line.
On December 23, 1946, Chuck Cooper, a Black basketball player and all-American, was set to play for Duquesne University against the University of Tennessee. However, the University of Tennessee refused to play the game because of Cooper's race. Despite this, Cooper went on to become the first Black player to participate in a college basketball game south of the Mason-Dixon line. He was later drafted by the Boston Celtics, becoming the first Black player ever drafted into the NBA .
Cooper was eventually inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame
