Christopher Lee's real-life experience made Saruman's death in Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King's extended edition far more realistic.

Christopher Lee's real-life experience made Saruman's death in The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King even more brutal. Saruman's story was controversially incomplete in the theatrical cuts of The Lord of the Rings trilogy. Lee fell out with the trilogy's director, Peter Jackson, following the premiere of the theatrical cut of The Return of the King, when he discovered that he had been cut from the film entirely.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY Before being cast as Saruman in Peter Jackson's Lord of the Rings trilogy, Christopher Lee was a highly acclaimed actor, known for his legendary role as Count Dracula in seven Hammer Horror movies, usually alongside his best friend Peter Cushing. He also appeared in the cult folk horror movie The Wicker Man and Roger Moore's James Bond adventure The Man With the Golden Gun.

In the behind-the-scenes documentary of the Lord of the Rings production, Jackson stated that Lee then began to talk about one of his "clandestine" WWII operations, indicating that he indeed had firsthand knowledge of the kind of noise someone makes when they are stabbed in the back. During the war, Christopher Lee had served as a volunteer in the Finnish Army, before joining the British Royal Air Force as an Intelligence Officer.

Why Christopher Lee Was Perfect For Saruman Although he initially wanted to play the role of Gandalf in the Lord of the Rings trilogy, Christopher Lee was perfect as the ancient wizard Saruman. Lee was a huge fan of JRR Tolkein's novels, making a habit of reading the Lord of the Rings books every year. Lee was actually the only member of the films' cast and crew to actually meet the author.

Christopher Lee's expertise in Lord of the Rings sometimes led to disagreements with Peter Jackson, causing Lee to state to the director, "You must understand, Peter — [Saruman]'s really not an evil man." However, Lee's passion for the novels shines through in his performance.
