Nicolas Cage aiming a weapon in Season of the Witch

As onscreen pairings go, Christopher Lee and Nicolas Cage aren't the most natural of cinematic partners. One is a British legend, famed for classy roles in The Lord of the Rings, James Bond, and Star Wars, as well as biting necks and releasing heavy metal albums.

The other is an enduring Hollywood icon known for quirky performances, a string of sub-par movies, and those damn bees. Anyone would be forgiven for forgetting Lee and Cage shared a screen at all, yet their paths surprisingly crossed in 2011. More surprising still, it happened in a fantasy epic, which is far more Lee's realm than Cage's. Directed by Dominic Sena, Season of the Witch involves Cage's Behmen and fellow Templar knight Felson tasked by Lee's Cardinal D'Ambroise with transporting an alleged witch through 14th century Germany. Things get stranger and spookier from there, with Season of the Witch delving deeper into the fantasy genre as the minutes pass. Fans are evidently discovering this for themselves, as Cage and Lee's unexpected team-up is sitting pretty at #6 on the top 10 movies in the United States on free streaming platform Tubi. Season of the Witch's streaming success is arguably more surprising than Christopher Lee and Nicolas Cage appearing in a fantasy movie together. Upon release, the film was a critical dud. Some Nicolas Cage movies have earned"so bad it's good" status over the years, but Season of the Witch found itself largely dismissed as a low-budget schlocky fantasy with few redeeming features. Cage's performance was among the many elements reviews targeted, and the actor earned a Razzie nomination for his troubles. Making Season of the Witch harder to enjoy was its tone, which didn't always seem aware of the film's ridiculousness. Had Cage and co. been allowed to have more fun, audiences might've followed suit and found something to enjoy in a movie that was, by no stretch of the imagination, going to stand out as one of Christopher Lee's greatest moments. As such, it's heartwarming to see Season of the Witch find an audience 15 years later. Being available for free probably helps. The thought of paying to watch Season of the Witch is likely to conjure up feelings of discontent, but it is a movie that can be entertaining in the right frame of mind. Despite having no official connection, there is a Dungeons & Dragons-esque buddy vibe that has helped Season of the Witch improve its reputation over time. Fans of camp supernatural fare could certainly do a lot worse, which could explain Season of the Witch's slightly higher audience score of 31% on Rotten Tomatoes. 9.0/10 Season of the Witch 10 stars 9 stars 8 stars 7 stars 6 stars 5 stars 4 stars 3 stars 2 stars 1 star Like Follow Followed PG-13 Adventure Fantasy Action Release Date January 7, 2011 Runtime 95 minutes Director Dominic Sena Writers Bragi F.
