Putting forth colorful hair and head-turning makeup, the artists behind the escapist beauty at Christopher John Rogers’s spring 2021 showcase reveal their creative process.
work in the 1970s, Rogers served up rainbow Swarovski crystal–embellished suits, color-block dresses, bright neon blazers, and bold couch floral prints that provided much-needed joy and light in an otherwise dark time.
As was the case for many designers, Rogers’s creative process was different this season. “At the beginning of quarantine, I didn’t have any illustration tools and couldn’t use my fabrics or really do anything other than drink wine and watch Netflix, so I ordered some crayons online and just started doodling and drawing and blending colors and having fun,” he says of his time in quarantine.
“We always have a range in looks because the casting is so incredibly eclectic, beautiful, and full of personality,” explains makeup artist. “We never want to just lock down on one look. It’s not realistic to assume that one beauty look will fit an entire array of personalities.” To emphasize naturally glowing complexions, Gutierrez enhanced clean, natural skin simply with light coverage and just a touch of sculpting powder.
For the flying braids, which were inspired by LaFond’s daughter, Milah, she was going for a nostalgia meets futurism. “Creating this look reminded me of getting my hair done growing up and having my mom and my aunts all hovering over me braiding away,” says LaFond, who achieved the flying effect by attaching fishing wire to the ends of the twists and tying the wire to a piece of wood.
To round out the looks, she took on bobs and ponytails with a modern Swinging Sixties slant. “It’s reminiscent of the 1960s, but with a sharper, blunt end instead of the classic flip,” she said, noting that it works well on all textures. “It’s really about the shape more than anything else. It’s young and fun, but still commands enough composure to work well with a power suit.
