A Christian preacher is being dragged before the Queensland Human Rights Commission over his views on Indigenous Welcome to Country ceremonies.
A Christian preacher is set to be dragged before the Queensland Human Rights Commission after he told an attendee at a Christian event that he wouldn't do a Welcome to Country ceremony because it was"incompatible" with Christian ity.
“And a Christian came along, and at the end of the evening, he asked – or his friend asked… ‘Why aren't you afraid of offending people by not doing a welcome to country?’ “My answer to that was an explanation of the duty of Christians to preach the truth and gospel and to not mix Christianity with false religion, such as the Aboriginal traditional religion, which is bearing all the hallmarks of animism and paganism,” he said.
Mr Pellowe is now being dragged before the Queensland Human Rights Commission for his comments, but the Christian preacher said the problem was not with the gentleman who had taken offence to his comments, but with “a grievance industry that has no bar for accepting grievances”. Mr Pellow said he would never “apologize for preaching the gospel or pay a penalty imposed by any statutory body for doing so”.
When speaking to Lyle Shelton, Mr Pellowe said his claim that Indigenous religious beliefs resembled “animism” was “not even Christian doctrine” but simply a fact.
