Cornerstone Adoption and Fostering Service has taken Ofsted to court. Pictured: Chairwoman of Cornerstone’s trustees, the Reverend Sheila Bamber

In an as-yet unpublished report, Ofsted found Cornerstone Adoption and Fostering Service discriminates by only working with evangelical Christian carers in man-woman marriages. The court was told this was because its selection process for foster carers is ‘not inclusive and it does not comply with the requirements of the Equality Act 2010’.

But the agency defended its policy at the High Court in Leeds today, claiming the regulator went beyond its powers when it ‘came in on a white charger’ as a champion of equality and diversity.Aidan O’Neill QC, for Cornerstone, said Ofsted had engaged in ‘regulatory overreach’ and are ‘not a champion for equality, diversity and the protection of human rights’.
