A LEADING “anti-slavery” organisation has been snatching Ghanaian children from their homes, a new investigation has found.
In one case, Fatima, 11, was bundled away after four cars sped into a tiny village called Mogyigna. The child’s grandmother, Sana, had a gun aimed at her neck as the men carried out their operation.Multimillion-dollar charity IJM has in the past worked with the Clinton Global Initiative, brainchild of the former US president.The incident, last September, was officially carried out by the Ghanaian police, but the BBC say the operation was instigated by IJM.
But locals say the children are simply helping their families by fishing. Many children in rural Ghana work because their parents cannot afford to send them to school. Three of the children were returned after Ghana’s social services intervened. IJM classified a fourth child as “trafficked” but this claim is disputed by his family.Fatima’s uncles, Nantogma Abukari and Sayibu Alhassan, were charged with child trafficking but charges were later dropped. However, the pair used up their life savings to attend court hearings.The children were the grandkids of the local chief, who died soon afterwards.
