Christa McAuliffe is still a pioneer, decades after she was picked to become America’s first teacher in space.
FILE - This Sept. 26, 1985 photo made available by NASA shows astronaut Christa McAuliffe. is still a pioneer — this time as the first woman to be memorialized on the grounds of New Hampshire's Statehouse, in the city where she taught high school.
“To see a hero like Christa McAuliffe memorialized in this way will undoubtedly inspire the next generation of students each time they visit the New Hampshire Statehouse,” Gov. Chris Sununu said in a statement. Hisenabled the McAuliffe statue to join statues of leaders such as Daniel Webster, John Stark and President Franklin Pierce.
In 2017-2018, two educators-turned-astronauts at the International Space Station recorded some of the lessons that McAuliffe had planned to teach, on Newton’s laws of motion, liquids in microgravity, effervescence and chromatography.
