Stapleton teams up with Snoop Dogg and Cindy Blackman Santana for a new version of the 1981 classic.
The country-rock superstar recorded his own rendition of Collins' 1981 classic"In the Air Tonight" to be the new anthem for ESPN’s "Monday Night Football."
Sounding eerily like Collins, Stapleton belts out the song's lyrics, which tell the story of a man seething with fury after a betrayal. A fuller version of the song, complete with Snoop’s “football-centric verses," debuts before two “Monday Night Football” games on Sept 18: New Orleans Saints-Carolina Panthers on ESPN at 7:15 p.m. ET and Cleveland Browns-Pittsburgh Steelers on ABC at 8:15 p.m. ET.The show's opening sequence will also include NFL stars, game highlights and"dramatic moments intercut with dramatic performances" from all three musical artists, ESPN said.
Pittsburgh Steelers legend Hines Ward, a two-time Super Bowl champ, discussed Pittsburgh head coach Mike Tomlin playing Collins' hit the night before the 2009 Super Bowl“It was fascinating to me to see how one song could get you in that mode to go out there and just kick some tail,” said Ward.

The new Monday Night Football song is Chris Stapleton and Snoop Dog covering “In the Air Tonight.”The iconic Phil Collins song has been reworked with “football centric verses” from Snoop; the all-important drums are being played by legendary touring drummer Cindy Blackman Santana. Incredible quotes from the USA Today story about the project as well: — “Collins gave his blessing to the project once he had assurances it would not replace the “MNF” theme song – “the four notes,” as those on the creative content team call it.” — “Snoop was responsible for seven different rap sections that take about 17 seconds total.” — “The anthem will play before every ESPN game aside from the Week 4 London game between the Jacksonville Jaguars and Atlanta Falcons (on ESPN+) because kickoff is at 9:30 a.m. ET.” I cannot wait to hear the 17 seconds of football raps that are too hot for the AM.
