Chris Rock's new stand-up special finally saw him publicly discuss the slap in typically unfiltered fashion, and Netflix cleverly capitalized on it.
Chris Rock's highly-anticipated new special, Selective Outrage, is now available on Netflix, but it was initially available to stream live. The comedian became a huge star in the 2000s, and while he started in comedy, he quickly became a movie star and host, known just as well for his jokes at Academy Awards ceremonies and playing Marty the zebra in Madagascar as he is for his stand-up specials.
SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY Selective Outrage was anticipated because Rock hasn't publicly mentioned the slap. At the 94th Academy Awards, when Rock was on stage and about to announce the award for Best Documentary, Will Smith slapped Rock following a joke Rock made about Jada Pinkett-Smith. It became known as "the slap heard across the world," Following the incident, the world took sides and was all people could talk about for months.
The special being streamed live turned the hour-long show from a stand-up gig into a worldwide event, and while it's full of hilarious one-liners and stories, everybody was waiting for the comments on the slap, most of which didn't arrive until the very end of the hour. And now, it is available to watch at any time. More viewers are watching out of interest after Rock's comments have blown the internet's mind too. Netflix cleverly capitalized on that.
How Chris Rock's Netflix Special Could Define Later Live Showings Between being the first movie streaming service or creating original content and competing with networks, Netflix has broken ground on several occasions. And live streaming stand-up specials could be Netflix's next revolutionary step forward.
