to win on Monday, no opponent to outmaneuver, no play to dial up, no late-season crucible to survive and ponder. All those tests are coming, though. They are absolutely coming.
But on Monday, Paul sounded much more open to the idea of a reserve role and, most importantly for the larger situation, seemed wholly in tune with the Warriors’ urgent mindset these days. The dynastic core doesn’t have forever to win a fifth title, which only has been underlined by acquiring somebody even older than all three of them. It’s time to get as serious and practical — and realistic — as possible.
Neither of those situations is exactly like this one, but Paul’s reactions on Monday were important because he’s so important. This might not lead the Warriors to another title. This might only be a short-term marriage, since Paul’s 2024-25 contract is non-guaranteed. But it absolutely has no chance if Paul wasn’t buying into the Warriors’ ethos on Day 1 of camp. But he is. And they’re buying into him.
“Klay had guarded me for years,” Paul said. “We was playing pickup the other day and he guarded me and I looked up and said, ‘We don’t do this no more.'”Paul delivered all of these lines with a deadpan stare on Monday, which is his style. You’re not always sure if he’s joking, being mean, just stating facts or all three at once. Which is the point of it for Paul, I’m pretty sure. There’s just nothing cutesy or cloying about him. Right now, the Warriors don’t want cutesy. They want to win.
