Mr Hipkins has been an MP since 2008, and currently serves as the police and education minister.
In a statement, New Zealand Labour Party chief whip Duncan Webb said: “The Labour Party caucus will meet at 1pm on Sunday to endorse the nomination and confirm Chris Hipkins as Party Leader.”found Hipkins was the most popular potential candidate among voters, and had the backing of 26% of those surveyed.Ms Ardern said at the New Zealand Labour Party’s annual caucus meeting, said she would stand down no later than 7 February, adding: “I know what this job takes.
“I am entering now my sixth year in office, and for each of those years, I have given my absolute all. Mr Hipkins rose to public prominence during the coronavirus pandemic, when he took on a kind of crisis management role. Ms Ardern became the youngest female head of Government in the world when she was appointed to the role aged just 37.
She was praised around the world for her handling of the nation’s worst-ever mass shooting and the early stages of the pandemic.Mr Hipkins tenure as leader may be short as the country will be holding a general election in October.
