Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital recorded 1 824 infant deaths between 2020 and 2022. This is according to a response by Health Minister Dr Joe Phaahla, in a written reply to Parliament

Phaahla said the department’s plans to reduce avoidable infant mortality were that all healthcare facilities should have a monitoring and evaluation team for perinatal mortality data, using a perinatal problem identification program to exclude avoidable deaths.

He said senior management should ensure that junior staff were provided with technical support and onsite corrective measures, and that provincial management should submit and verify their PPIP data to the national department of health. Hospitals should strengthen capacity to identify and care for acutely sick children, not limited to the equitable allocation and non-rotation of staff, and ensure an effective triage system. They should strengthen daily ward rounds, including on weekends. Empower households and strengthen community services to promote early entry into the health service and reduce barriers.
