Dr. Christopher Borroni-Bird never set out to work in the auto industry. He's not what you'd call a car enthusiast, and his degree in natural sciences didn't exactly offer him an obvious pathway to what would become a pioneering career in the automotive space. Yet over the past three decades, he's been at the bleeding edge of guiding how the industry will evolve into whatever it will become in the next three.
"Why not proactively develop engineering and technology solutions that give designers more freedom to create vehicles with shorter overhangs or more interior space or more exciting lighting technologies and things like that?" he continued.
How Qualcomm approached its cell phone business offers an interesting case study in how building a software-controlled platform can often offer as much if not more value than creating the entire product. In the 1990s, Qualcomm manufactured complete cell phones but later sold off that business to Kyocera, deciding to focus instead on creating the underlying technology.
