The driver involved in a crash that killed a Santa Clara County correctional deputy was drunk and driving on the wrong side of the highway, authorities said.

early Saturday morning was caused by a driver going the wrong way on Highway 87, according to authorities. In a news release Monday morning, the California Highway Patrol revealed that the 26-year-old driver of a Toyota Sienna involved in the collision was driving northbound on southbound Highway 87, near the connector to Interstate 280, just south of downtown San Jose.
At around 4:50 a.m., the Toyota collided head-on with a Honda Accord, killing the Honda driver, a 51-year old correctional deputy with the Santa Clara County Sheriff’s Office. The driver of the Toyota was arrested on suspicion of felony DUI, CHP Officer Ross Lee said Monday. The CHP will recommend charges to the Santa Clara County District Attorney’s Office, Lee said. The suspect suffered moderate injuries as a result of the crash.
