Competing every day of the Melbourne Royal Show, third generation wood chopper Stephen Foster has a single focus for the future.

Woodchopper Stephen Foster is in peak athletic form and competing in four championships at this year’s Melbourne Royal Show, hoping all his preparation will lead to a win in the world competition in Sydney next year – the same contest his father and grandfather also won.

Third generation woodchopper Stephen Foster will take on some of the best in the world in this year’s Melbourne Royal Show.Foster’s success in Melbourne will depend on his ability to triumph over Victorian Laurence O’Toole Jnr, a two-time world champion titleholder who is competing this weekend off the back of a win at the Sydney Show in April.

“My father’s side all was woodchoppers and my mother’s side all was woodchoppers as well. So it’s all in my blood,” he said. “I’ve had an axe in my hands since I was about two years old.” Having hung up his axe, the 66-year-old has travelled to Melbourne alongside his grandson Scott this year as a spectator and supporter.

World champion woodchopper David Foster will be watching from the sidelines as his son Stephen Foster competes in the Melbourne Royal Show competitions this weekend.Foster, a salesman by day who works in a warehouse, says there’s not much money in woodchopping. The top prize in Sydney, about $5000, will help pay the travel fees, he says.
