Former Oregon and UCLA head coach Chip Kelly has been named the new head coach of the Las Vegas Raiders.
Chip Kelly is returning to the NFL , this time as the head coach of the Las Vegas Raiders . The Raiders announced Kelly's hiring on Wednesday after a recent coaching search. Kelly, a well-known offensive mind, previously served as head coach for the Philadelphia Eagles and the San Francisco 49ers, amassing a 28-35 record in the NFL . Kelly has also enjoyed success in college football, most notably during his stint as the head coach of the Oregon Ducks .
Oregon flourished under Kelly's leadership, finishing with an impressive 46-7 record across four seasons. He led the Ducks to two Fiesta Bowl victories, a BCS National Championship runner-up finish in 2010, and a plethora of offensive firepower. Kelly coached talented players like Heisman Trophy winner Marcus Mariota and running back LeGarrette Blount during his time in Eugene. Kelly's most recent coaching experience was as the head coach of the UCLA Bruins from 2018 to 2023, where he compiled a 45-37 record. He was also the offensive coordinator for the Buckeyes in 2007 and 2008 before becoming their head coach for four years. The Buckeyes have lost both head coordinators, as defensive coordinator Jim Knowles also left Ohio State to take the same role with the Penn State Nittany Lions. This move marks Kelly's third attempt at leading an NFL franchise. His previous experiences in Philadelphia and San Francisco provided valuable insights and lessons that he can now apply to his new challenge in Las Vegas. Kelly's offensive acumen and track record of developing talented players make him a formidable coach who could potentially revitalize the Raiders' offense. The Raiders will be hoping that Kelly can bring his winning mentality and offensive firepower to the Silver and Black and lead them back to prominence in the NFL
