Chinese scientists have developed a water-based battery with nearly double the energy density compared to traditional lithium batteries, according to new research published in a paper in
According to researchers from the Chinese Academy of Sciences, tests revealed an impressive energy density of the iodine and bromine-based aqueous battery, reaching 1200 watt-hours per liter , surpassing the 700Wh/L of non-aqueous lithium batteries. Additionally, the researchers emphasized the safety advantages of their aqueous battery over non-aqueous lithium batteries, notorious for their high flammability., the water-based battery “shows promising potential for the development of next-generation high-energy-density and safe rechargeable aqueous batteries,” as quoted by the researchers.
One of the authors, Li Xianfeng, a professor at the CAS Dalian Institute of Chemical Physics, stated that their findings “may expand aqueous battery applications in the power battery field.”Codelco: SQM lithium talks on track, but much still to resolve SQM has been in talks with Codelco since last year over a potential partnership to mine the key battery metal. The group, owned by Eramet and Tsingshan, is set to inaugurate its first lithium carbonate plant in the northern Argentine province of Salta. The US producer aims to hold more auctions in China as well as other geographies such as Australia while adding lithium hydroxide to its offerings.

Analysis Reveals Colorado River Water Used More for Growing Crops than for DrinkingA new analysis has found that more Colorado River water is used to grow a single crop than for drinking water, business needs, and industrial uses combined across the seven-state river basin. The analysis highlights the significant usage of water for growing alfalfa, which is used to feed cattle. The study provides a comprehensive understanding of where the Colorado River water goes and includes estimates for water exported outside the basin, water use in Mexico, and water lost to evaporation.
