A ninth victim has been identified in the ongoing 'Salt Typhoon' hacking operation orchestrated by Chinese hackers, raising concerns about the scope of the breach.
A ninth victim has been identified in the Chinese hacking operation known as Salt Typhoon, according to a top White House official. Deputy national security adviser Anne Neuberger told reporters Friday that the administration identified the victim after releasing guidance to companies on how to detect Chinese culprits in their networks.
This update comes amid growing alarm over the massive hack, which has exposed cybersecurity vulnerabilities in the private sector and highlighted China's sophisticated hacking capabilities. The hackers compromised the networks of telecommunications companies to obtain customer call records and access the private communications of an unknown number of Americans. While the FBI has not publicly named any victims, officials believe senior U.S. government officials and prominent political figures are among those whose communications were accessed. Neuberger said officials still don't know how many Americans were affected overall, but a 'large number' were in the Washington-Virginia area. Officials believe the hackers' goal was to identify phone owners and, if they were 'government targets of interest,' spy on their texts and phone calls
