MG, Chery Group and BYD are expanding dealer footprints, warranties and service programmes in Britain, reshaping the market with competitive pricing, electric options and extensive after‑sales infrastructure.

Chinese automakers are making a dramatic push into the United Kingdom, offering buyers an appealing mix of lower purchase prices, contemporary styling, high‑tech cabins and notably low running costs.

Brands such as MG, Jaecoo, and BYD have captured a sizeable slice of the market in a remarkably short period - by early 2024 they were responsible for roughly one‑fifth of all new‑car registrations, a share achieved in just four years. Industry monitor Autotrader forecasts that the number of distinct brands available to UK motorists will climb to eighty by the end of 2026, up from fifty in 2019.

This expansion is not limited to the badge on the grille; the manufacturers are also building robust dealer and after‑sales networks designed to rival the established European giants. The question for new owners, however, is what level of support they can expect once the keys are in their hands. What infrastructure exists to service these vehicles, and will the after‑sales experience deliver the peace of mind traditionally associated with long‑standing marques?

MG, perhaps the most recognisable Chinese‑owned name in Britain, operates a network of 180 franchised dealers. The company stresses that every technician working on an MG is fully trained and certified, and that only genuine MG components are used in repairs, a promise that underpins the brand's warranty and resale‑value strategy. MG's service plans cover the mandatory MOT, though customers must add this element when configuring their package.

Each service performed at a franchised outlet is logged in a national database, creating a comprehensive service history that can boost a vehicle's future market value. As an added perk, MG dealers provide a twelve‑month roadside‑assistance package delivered by the AA. The warranty framework is generous: a seven‑year manufacturer guarantee applies to any new MG registered on or after 1 September 2019.

The Chery Group, despite having entered the UK market less than two years ago, already runs four distinct brands - Chery, Omoda, Jaecoo and the newly‑launched Lepas - and is rapidly extending its retail footprint. Omoda and Jaecoo arrived in August 2024 and January 2025 respectively, and together they now boast a combined network of 124 retailers. A Chery‑branded vehicle is sold on average every 83 seconds, according to the company.

The parent brand, Chery, has secured more than 80 retail locations since its summer‑2025 debut, while Lepas is set to develop its own dedicated network. Partnerships with major dealership groups such as Arnold Clark, Listers and Sytner have accelerated the rollout. Chery encourages owners to return to its authorised centres for servicing, promising that all work uses genuine parts and that a full service record will be kept to protect resale value.

Standard benefits include a complimentary exterior wash and interior vacuum, over‑the‑air software updates and a comprehensive vehicle‑health check. The prescribed service interval is either 36 months or 30,000 miles, whichever occurs first. Warranty provision mirrors MG's offering: a seven‑year or 100,000‑mile guarantee for all new cars across the four marques.

Independent research from This is Money and Warrantywise notes, however, that certain components on Jaecoo models - notably the infotainment system and exhaust - are only covered for three years or 40,000 miles. BYD, widely billed as the 'Tesla killer' and the world's largest electric‑vehicle manufacturer, entered the UK market in 2023 and has since accelerated its dealership expansion at a pace comparable to MG.

By the end of March 2026 the brand operated 132 live sites; projections for mid‑June anticipate a network of 150 locations. Growth has been driven largely through collaborations with established dealers, including Arnold Clark, Greenhous Group, Lookers and Vertu. Deputy Country Manager Steve Beattie explained that customer confidence is bolstered when a familiar local dealer begins to stock BYD models, reinforcing the brand's credibility.

BYD's after‑sales proposition promises lower long‑term repair expenses, enhanced vehicle performance and an extended lifespan for its electric cars, reinforcing the appeal of its competitive pricing and advanced technology. Together, these Chinese entrants are reshaping the UK automotive landscape not only by expanding the choice set for consumers but also by investing heavily in service infrastructure, warranty coverage and strategic dealer partnerships.

As the market continues to evolve, UK motorists are likely to benefit from increased competition, broader access to electric‑vehicle technology and a more diverse after‑sales ecosystem that challenges the traditional dominance of European manufacturers
