ANU Professor of International Security John Blaxland says China is trying to “flex its muscles” in response to any kind of collaboration between Taiwan and the US.

“This is grandstanding, this is muscle flexing, this is about telegraphing messages to the United States and to the Taiwanese people and to others as well that China is a muscular power, that it will get what it wants … and it’s prepared to take its time to do so,” Mr Blaxland told Sky News Australia.

“I think the point here is to try and damage Taiwanese morale and certainly undermine the resolve of the United States to continue supporting Taiwan.”
