China has achieved a major milestone in energy technology with the successful ignition test of its most powerful gas turbine. This domestically built 300-megawatt F-class heavy-duty gas turbine is claimed to be the largest and most advanced in China, capable of generating nearly 450,000 kilowatts per hour.
This 300-megawatt F-class heavy-duty gas turbine consists of five major systems and over 50,000 components with the highest power output and technical grade. A heavy-duty gas turbine has passed a key ignition test in China.
Set to generate power, the 300-megawatt heavy-duty gas turbine is the first to be built domestically in China. The turbine is also used to power warships. The ignition test is claimed to be a significant milestone for China. When it began the project eight years ago, the Asian giant was reportedly 30 years behind the West in this technology. Developed by China United Gas Turbine Technology Co, the turbine passed the ignition test in Shanghai’s Lingang area. The 300MW F-class unit is claimed to China’s largest and most advanced heavy-duty gas turbine the country domestically developed.is another milestone following the rollout of the first prototype in February, officially advancing the program into full machine testing and validation. This 300-megawatt F-class heavy-duty gas turbine consists of five major systems and over 50,000 components with the highest power output and technical grade inChina claimed that a single set of this powerful machine could generate nearly 450,000 kilowatts per hour, which is enough to fulfil one-eighth of the average hourly electricity needs in Beijing.Mo Jingfei, director of the science and technology management department at China United Gas Turbine Technology, told Xinhua that compared with the generation efficiency of 35-46 percent for conventional thermal power, the generation efficiency of combined cycle power plants can reach 55 percent, and can be coupled with new energy to better meet user demands in peak adjustment. The biggest gas turbine currently operating is the SGT5-8000H made by German company Siemens. It weighs in at 390 tonnes – about the same as an Airbus A380 – and its 375MW capacity is equal to the combined turbocharged engine power of 1,300 Porsche 911 cars.
